David McComb’s Breakout Season Is Over. Miami’s Hype Just Changed.

The quarterback who became the constant face of Hype & Honor’s first month is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

David McComb was my favorite player on this Miami team.

He was also the only player who never really left the Hype & Honor spotlight.

Pittsburgh introduced him. Holy Cross showed his ceiling. Cincinnati proved he could compete with a Power Four rival, and UConn showed how much Miami already depended on him.

Now his breakout season is over.

Chuck Martin announced Friday that McComb is expected to miss the remainder of 2026 after suffering multiple injuries during Miami’s comeback victory over UConn. The news arrived after our Bowling Green preview was published and completely changed the outlook of Miami’s season.

Through four starts, McComb threw for 1,121 yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception. He added three rushing touchdowns, led Miami through a brutal nonconference schedule and earned nine Bricks, the highest total on the Football Brick Board.

The statistics only explain part of why this hurts.

McComb made this version of Miami feel different. Even when the running game disappeared, the protection broke down or the defense forced the offense into another comeback, he gave the RedHawks a chance to create something explosive. He played without fear and quickly became the clearest evidence that Miami’s increased roster investment could produce a different kind of ceiling.

Caleb Heavner deserves a real opportunity to lead the offense, especially after completing 17 of 24 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in his first start against Bowling Green. Miami can still compete in the MAC, and Martin has previously won a conference championship after losing his starting quarterback.

But pretending the expectations remain unchanged would be dishonest.

The version of 2026 built around McComb’s emergence is gone. Miami must now prove that its investment created enough depth, coaching and support to survive losing the player who made the entire season feel possible.

For the first time since Hype & Honor launched, McComb will not be part of the next game’s spotlight.

That hurts more than I expected.
